Help feed dogs and cats in South African Shelters and impoverished communities
Decrease the suffering, abandonment and euthanasia of South
African Pets through education and a spay and neuter programme
Provide people and their pets with the tools they need to develop lasting and successful relationships with one another and with their communities.
Provide a central point for people looking to adopt and re-home their pets.
Dogtown South Africa Pty Ltd is a non profit section 21 company. Our website BarkingMad is a volunteer run website dedicated to the welfare of our shelter animals around the country. We support 24-30 shelters/ rescue groups in our click to feed project and we provide a central point for shelters and the public to help re-home dogs and to provide free advice to pet owners.
We have a steady flow of regular visitors to the BarkingMad website. We are presently experiencing +-20000 clicks a day and it's steadily growing. ALL money raised through advertising on the website goes to feeding and providing medical care to animals in shelters and impoverished communities.
DOGTOWN SA
After completing a course at Dogtown USA on how to start and run an animal sanctuary, we have built our own sanctuary to compliment the existing shelters. We saw that with the amount of animals being abandoned, it isn’t always possible for dogs to receive the special care they may need to help them find their forever home.
We offer to take in long term dogs and dogs that have been deemed “problem dogs” from other shelters and provide them with the best care and rehabilitation programmes, whether it be behaviour modification or extensive medical treatments. We also have a retirement village for our oldies but goodies.
The dogs taken into our care are assessed on arrival and then an individual training programme is put into place by our 2 internal behaviourists at DogtownSA. Our dogs receive a full medical examination and are chipped,vaccinated and sterilised. We offer a lifelong commitment to all the dogs that come into our care and a lifetime support to their new families.
Our internal Inspector investigates all cruelty cases reported to us and when necessary these dogs are taken by us.
About the founder Tracy McQuarrie
After successfully running my own post production facility for over 15 years I decided it was time to make a difference and give back to my community.
My passion has always been animals. I’m an internationally qualified dog trainer, animal behaviourist and I’m in my 3rd and final year of study to become a small animals TTouch Practitioner.
After following the programme Dogtown on Nat Geo Wild I realised this is what our local shelters are missing. I decided to visit the biggest and most successful animal shelter in the USA to learn how they have become so successful. I attended a workshop on how to start an animal sanctuary at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in UTAH where I learnt how to create a better life for shelter animals and increase the rate of successfully rehoming dogs.
I believe that euthanasia of a healthy dog because of lack of funds and space is not an acceptable solution. We need to stop the problem at the source and end the irresponsible breeding of animals and put an end to puppy mills. Shelter dogs have an unfair reputation of being problems dogs but if we could assist shelters with a training and rehabilitation programme for the animals in their care, these dogs can go on to be happy well adjusted pets.
We created the barkingmad website to:
Provide a central point for the shelters and the public to find homes for abandoned pets.
Reunite lost and found pets with their families.
Help raise funds to feed the shelter dogs through our click to feed project.
Advertisers on the website fund the feeding project while advertising their product to thousands a day.
Provide free advice on how to take care of your pet.
Assist the less fortunate to take care of their animals.
