The VUSA Rugby and Learning Academy Trust
VUSA, (The isiXhosa word for awaken) is an initiative that began as a part-time rugby programme for children in the Langa community. As the programme developed, greater needs were identified. The root cause of the challenges that some of our youth face, such as poor mental and physical health, addiction, homelessness, crime and family breakdown are often attributed to deficiencies in early childhood. The VUSA programme’s primary goal is to provide a hub of excellence in Langa to ensure that these challenges are addressed early on; creating opportunities and as safe space for these children to learn, play and grow.
This is acheived by offering 150 primarily school children from the Langa Community a structured after school programme which includes:
- English and Maths Academic support
- Rugby Training
- Entry into the WP Schools Rugby League
- A recreational programme
- A hot nutricious meal at the end of each day
- VUSA's newest programme is a morning creche programme which introduces numeracy and literacy through movement and play
