Personal message
Lungile Moferi, a remarkable individual who has dedicated his life to making a difference in the lives of underprivileged children in his community. Lungile is an integral part of the VUSA team, having joined three years ago, and he heads up the inspiring VUSA Mobile Library project.
Each morning, Lungile loads his trusty tuk-tuk with books and travels to three Early Childhood Development (ECD) centers in Langa. There, he captivates the hearts and minds of the children, aged 3 to 6 years old, by reading enchanting stories to them. Lungile takes immense pride in his work, as he recognizes the importance of nurturing a love for reading from an early age.
Lungile's life revolves around three passions: his family, his job, and running. At the age of 64, he is preparing to embark on his seventh Comrades Marathon, an awe-inspiring achievement. Last year, Lungile raised funds to fulfill his dream of participating in the marathon, and he was overwhelmed by the support he received. This year, he wants to pay it forward and raise funds for the children he cares so deeply about.
Lungile is currently working on a project to provide bread for the children he serves. For a while, VUSA received daily bread donations, but unfortunately, this support has come to an end. Lungile himself knows the pain of hunger from his own childhood, and he is determined to ensure that no child under his care experiences the same hardship. The funds raised through this campaign will go towards purchasing bread and books for Lungile's program.
Allow us to share Lungile's incredible journey with you. Growing up as an orphan in Guguletu, Lungile had limited access to education. As a teenager, he met his wife, and despite his own limited career prospects due to the language barrier (he couldn't speak English), he took on the responsibility of supporting her. Lungile understood the value of education and made it a priority to read English books to his three boys every day. Through this commitment, he not only improved his English skills but also instilled a love for learning in his children.
Tragically, Lungile's wife passed away from Lupus at the young age of 35, leaving him to raise their boys alone. Devoted to his family, Lungile never remarried and dedicated himself entirely to being there for his sons. At the age of 53, by chance, he discovered the transformative power of running. Some may call him addicted or crazy, but running has become Lungile's lifeblood, an irreplaceable passion that drives him forward. He races every weekend and trains four days a week, pushing his limits at the age of 63.
Employed by VUSA, a remarkable organization focused on awakening opportunities, Lungile found his true calling as a storyteller for underprivileged kids. Lungile's impact goes beyond reading stories; he builds confidence, instills pride, and teaches respect and responsibility. When he steps into the classroom, the children's faces light up, and they cheer for their beloved "teacher."
Lungile sees immense potential in these children—the future teachers, doctors, engineers, and leaders of South Africa. He loves and cares deeply for these children, witnessing
