As the Covid-19 lockdown continues we see an increase in hunger and desperation and feel we need to do more.
VUSA's primary objective is to provide vulnerable children with sport opportunities (primarily rugby) and academic support. Obviously the Covid-19 lockdown has suspended all programmes. Whilst the more privileged communities have been able to accommodate their learners with online schooling, the majority of South African children fall further behind. The VUSA Academy is working on providing some academic support for the children in the form of weekly worksheets and games, as well as providing fitness and mental health exercises, however, the dire need in the Langa community is food. Many people have lost jobs or are not earning due to not being able to go to work. In addition, the children who were receiving daily meals through school feeding schemes and after school programmes, like VUSA, are only getting fed twice a week.
As such, all efforts are currently being directed at food and academic support. Vusa have opened a second distribution point to ensure children do not have to travel too far to access a hot meal. The appeal is for soup to be made (for collection or drop off - information on this can be found HERE) or for donations for soup ingredients. For as little as R60 we can provide a 5 liter pot of soup - Between 120 and 200 children are being fed through this initiative daily and so every drop counts.
