Personal messageLungile joined the VUSA Team 2 years ago. He heads up the VUSA Mobile Library project and takes great pride in loading his tuk-tuk full of books and driving to three ECD centres in Langa each morning to read stories to his beloved children, (aged 3 - 6 years old). Lungile has 3 passions; his family, his job and running. At 63 he has just completed his 6th Comrades Marathon. VUSA helped him to raise funds to get to this year's Comrades and he was blown away by the support he received. Lungile works and lives communities where children have very little. After raising funds running the comerades, Lungile realised that he could use his one passion to support another. This is his story:
My name is Lungile Moferi. I live in Guguletu, and grew up an orphan. I had very little education and met my wife when we were both teenagers. I knew I had a responsibility to support her and got a job as labourer. I couldn't speak English which limited my career prospects. When my three boys were were born to us, I wanted a better life for them and when they started school I use to read English books to them every day. My English start getting better but my wife died of Lupus at age of 35 and I had to carry on raising my boys alone. I never married again, I lived for my boys. At the age of 53, by chance I discovered running. Some people say I'm addicted to running, others says I'm crazy - but running is my life. I can't stop it. I race every weekend and I train four days a week. I'm 63 years. I have just complted the Comrades and am now preparing for the Cape Town Marathon. I am employed by Vusa "awaken opportunities". My job is to read stories for the under privilege kids. I drive a Tuk Tuk loaded with books and read stories to three creches every day. I have discovered my true calling. I love reading stories to kids and giving back to the community. I see a great potential in those kids; a south African future - I see teachers, doctors, engineers etc. I love and care for these kids and see the impact of my job, building confidence and increasing low esteem, building pride and teaching them respect & responsibility. The moment I step into the class they all shout teacher, teacher - I love working for Vusa and will now carry on running to support VUSA and our children. #AwakenOpportunities
Until very recently, we received a generous donation of bread for each of our three ECD centres every week. This donation has come to an end. I would like to raise funds to continue to give our children this bread as the meal they receive at school is often the only meal they receive every day. I would like to raise R6000 to provide each centre with an ongoing supply of bread until the end of 2022.
