NSPCA - National Council of SPCAs

The NSPCA is a statutory body and has locus standi to act on behalf of animals as a result of the SPCA Act 169 of 1993.

In addition to being an administration body, the NSPCA deals with national issues and has six specialised nationally operational Units, namely, Animal Ethics, Farm Animals, Special Projects, Special Investigations, Wildlife and Society Liaison.

There are also three back room specialist support units: Training; Education and Communications.

The NSPCA also operates in areas where there is no SPCA, or where support is required or has been specifically re­quested, or in response to disasters, e.g. emergencies, floods and fires.

ISSUES INCLUDE (but are not limited to): Awareness Campaigns; Compilation of Codes and Regulations; Development of Units or Standards within industries that utilise animals; Disaster Response; Emergency Relief; Monitoring of Welfare Standards; Negotiation at Government and Provincial level; Presentation of courses on welfare to Correctional Services, South African Police Services and Traffic Services.
