National Freedom Network NPC
The National Freedom Network (NFN) is the network of people and organisations working on the ground against Human Trafficking across South Africa. We also act as a support centre for our various members, and represent Civil Society at National Government level.
Human Trafficking is the second most profitable organised crime globally, and has also been cited as the fastest growing. People are daily being stripped of their dignity and freedom.
We firmly believe that one of the most strategic responses to Human Trafficking, is networking. We need to be just as organised as the criminal and syndicate entities and activities that we oppose, if not even more so. It is only through unity of purpose and direction that we will see tangible impact against this gross violation of human rights.
The NFN began in May 2011 and has since grown into a remarkable network of over 100 members.
Through this network we endeavour to:
- Open and maintain channels of communication between those on the ground, between Provinces, and between grassroots efforts and Government
- Avoid duplication
- Encourage sharing of resources and information
- Identify where the major gaps and challenges lie
- Allow for higher credibility within the counter-Human Trafficking field
- Allow for referral within a network of experts, skills and knowledge
- Amplify and support the work on the ground
- Strive for better cooperation and coordination between Civil Society and Government efforts
- Provide shared space to collaborate, create solutions and discuss pressing and pertinent issues, and
- Provide case consultation and expert court testimony.
In addition to all this, we have also:
- Initiated an MOU between Civil Society and Government
- Created the first local online Counter-Human Trafficking Resource Library
- Had our CEO represent SA in the 2016 Global Freedom Exchange in USA
- Partnered with a member organisation to successfully target the Northern Cape with awareness, training and networking efforts
- Created a short PSA on Human Trafficking (Ruby’s Story) as well as a short film (Unthinkable)
- Enabled, through partnership, the training of close to 1,000 SAPS and Immigration officials across Limpopo and at OR Tambo International Airport
- Directly supported numerous victims and survivors on their journeys of healing and restoration, and
- Provided practical support to staff and victims at various safe houses across the country.
