For some reading is fun but for me reading, especially to gain knowledge, takes a huge amount of time, discipline and diligence.  

To gain knowledge and understanding of the complexity of human trafficking is daunting.  

My challenge for December is to read Marcel van der Watt's 523-page Thesis:  INVESTIGATING HUMAN TRAFFICKING FOR SEXUAL EXPLOITATION: FROM ‘LIVED EXPERIENCES’ TOWARDS A COMPLEX SYSTEMS UNDERSTANDING.

Some days I will read many pages and some days I might not read at all.
Most days I will share a sentence or fact from a page I am reading! We hope that the value of learning would be converted into a donation to this worthy cause.

Fact 1 from page iii) Numerous formal and informal conversations over the 5-year research period, site visits to multiple sex trade locations around South Africa and 91 in-depth and unstructured interviews with participants from 15 different vantage points were conducted. 

Fact 2 from page 4: Ideological fault lines, agendas and unsustainable claims regarding human trafficking for sexual exploitation are problematic as the tension between abolitionist and preservationist agendas continues to simmer. Those that adopt an abolitionist stance have often been accused of sensationalising the issue of human trafficking for sexual exploitation and of proffering ‘lies’, exaggerating and fuelling moral panic , whilst preservationist perspectives diminish the estimations about the scope of the problem, call for more evidence-based research and argue for the decriminalisation of the sex trade. 

Fact 3 from page 6: Up until now, a few dominant voices have commanded the understanding of this intricate monster called human trafficking.
