Kids Haven
Kids Haven is a registered Child and Youth Care Centre providing residential care to at least 152 vulnerable children in need of care and protection. Kids Haven opened in 1992 in response to black children on the streets of Benoni at a time when welfare services were segregated according to race. Benoni resident and social worker, Moira Simpson, responded to the needs of the children whom she met. At that time, the children asked for three things:
- The basics – something to eat, something to wear,
- Education – to go back to school,
- Family Contact – to tell their families that they were okay.
Kids Haven celebrates the 27th anniversary of continuous quality care to the vulnerable children of Ekurhuleni, particularly those in Benoni and surrounding areas like Daveyton, eTwatwa and Wattville. The programmes on offer continue to cover these three needs from 1992 but Kids Haven has grown to provide even more activities to reach children and meet their needs.
