Personal message
I am competing in the Midmar Mile 2017
My name is Hentie Nortjé. I am a blind long distance swimmer from Tshwane. I am currently preparing and planning to swim my 17th consecutive Midmar Mile on Saturday the 11th of February 2017.
As a Councillor in the City of Tshwane, I swam for the following schools and institutions over the last 4 years to raise money for them with the assistance of Backabuddy:
- Carel Du Toit Centre for children with hearing disabilities in 2013 (see: http://www.backabuddy.co.za/deaf-children2013thiscampaignisnowcomplete)
- Pathways-Pretoria School for multi disabled children in 2014 (see: https://www.backabuddy.co.za/blind-man-swims-for-disabled-children-)
- Pula Difate Primary School in 2015 (see: https://www.backabuddy.co.za/blind-man-swims-for-pula-difate-primary-school)
- Democratic Alliance in 2016 (see: https://www.backabuddy.co.za/blind-councillor-swims-16th-midmar-mile-fo2016)
I have many disabled friends. I am therefore fully aware of all the current respective challenges of the disabled person in the 21st century.
One of my friends is making use of a guide dog to assist him with his daily travelling from home to the office and back. He unfortunately lost his wife during the course of 2015. At that stage, his guide dog had to retire. When he received his new trained guide dog some months ago, I was just amazed by his excitement about his new companion!
It is because of this reason, namely that most guide dogs are not only an assistant to a visually impaired person, but in most cases also a friend, that I have decided to swim my 17th Midmar Mile for the South African Guide Dogs Association (SAGA).
The following facts about SAGA, makes interesting reading:
• SAGA is a fully constituted non-profit organisation
• They train on average 65 guide dogs per annum
• SAGA furthermore trains 5 – 8 social dogs per year
• They train orientation and mobility practitioners
• SAGA receives no financial support from the government
• It costs approximately R58 000-00 to train one guide dog
Therefore, it is only a privilege for me to swim my 17th Midmar Mile to raise money for the South African Guide Dogs Association!

SA Guide Dogs Association for the Blind

Since 1953, South African Guide-Dogs Association for the Blind (GDA) has strived to expand its offerings to the differently-abled community of Southern Africa, extending beyond Guide Dogs to include Service Dogs for people who are physically impaired, Autism Support Dogs for children with autism, and the College of Orientation & Mobility, whose Orientation & Mobility (O&M) practitioners teach people who are visually impaired to continue their lives in a safe and efficient manner and how to use a long cane as a mobility aid.
