Personal message

I AM COMPETING IN THE MIDMAR MILE 2014

My name is Hentie Nortjé.  I am from Pretoria and I have been blind since birth.  I was throughout my life fortunate enough to be blessed as a disabled person in many away and am I therefore always aware of the numerous difficulties my fellow disabled South-Africans are faced with on a daily basis.

I am a practicing attorney, a co-partner of a guesthouse in Lynnwood and also a DA councillor in the City of Tshwane Council.  As a councillor, I am part of the DA’s Pretoria-East Constituency.  It was
through my activities in this Constituency that I have met with the teachers and learners of Pathways-Pretoria School in Moreleta Park.  Most of these learners have more than one disability and are dependent on daily intensive care.

I was very much motivated by the positive outlook of the teachers and learners at Pathways-Pretoria and would like to make a small financial contribution to their daily expenses.  It is therefore that I have decided to swim my 14th consecutive Midmar Mile on Saturday the 8th of February 2014 with the goal to collect funds for Pathways-Pretoria.

I have a great passion for children and would be grateful if you will support my effort in this regard to make a small difference in the lives of the disabled children of Pathways-Pretoria.  Kindly support my project through the back-a-buddy system.  (I have also launched a similar project last year. Pathways-Pretoria is a centre for learners with moderate to severe disabilities.  We currently serve a 120 learners with various disabilities including intellectual and physical disabilities, blindness and autism through an intensive stimulation and educational programme  Our mission is for every child to reach his or her maximum potential and to become meaningfully employed as adults either in the open labour market or in a Pathways small business. In 2014 most donations will be utilised to expand our recycling small business through obtaining shredders and other recycling equipment.  This small business provides jobs for 10 young people with disabilities and we would like to like to create many more jobs.  We have several outreach projects in areas such as Soshanguve, Atterigeville and Hammanskraal and aim to empower teachers and care-givers through our kids4kids programme providing educational material made from recyclable material.  These toys and materials are made by children and young adults with disabilities.  Other things on our wish list include: educational toys, interactive white boards, adapted bicycles and computers.  Pathways is a registered article 18 organisation and has obtained a level 4 BEE status.
