Personal message

In February 2023, my Dad, Trevor (69), suffered a severe ischemic stroke, followed by an additional hemorrhagic stroke during his hospital stay. He contracted a hospital-acquired infection while in the ICU, leading to severe pneumonia. This left him in a medical coma, needing a tracheostomy for months. Subsequently, he underwent rehabilitation to regain bodily and cognitive functions, making little to no difference, the result is brain damage and hemiplegia (paralysis on one side of the body).

 

Trevor is unable to work and now grappling with vascular dementia and cognitive decline. My siblings and I have been forced to maintain private medical aid for our Dad, an option not easily accessible to many. His care includes chronic medication, regular GP check-ups, neuro screenings, occupational and physiotherapy, as well as treatment for depression. Trevor requires a full-time caregiver for daily grooming, feeding, changing, and assistance with mobility. Unfortunately, there is no private coverage for the caregiver, additional medical supplies, equipment, and consumables, leading our family to privately fund these expenses, amounting to approximately R40 000 per month.

 

Witnessing our Dad in this state has been incredibly challenging; he was a vibrant individual who rode a superbike until the day he had the stroke. His presence was all-encompassing. Our family has always been self-sufficient and we have never sought financial support. My siblings and I work, yet we find ourselves unable to afford or maintain the necessary level of care required for our father.
