Personal message

Hi,

This is a request for donations to raise money for early learning development for underprivileged children in South Africa.  I will be seeking to beat my previous best time of 3:48:47.

For those of you that are unfamiliar with the Cape Argus, it is a 110km cycle race around the Cape Peninsular. It also happens to be the largest timed cycle race in the world, with 35,000 entrants.  While it is a fairly (for some) flat course, the unpredictability of the weather, in particular the wind, can make it a very challenging route.

The race on the 10th March 2013 will be the fourth time that I have participated in the Argus.  This year we have decided to ride for charity, and raise money for Africa Tikkun.  Afrika Tikkun (www.afrikatikkun.org) supports underprivileged children to become strong, confident and educated adults by investing in education, health and social services for children and their families.  Its vision is so strong that Nelson Mandela become their patron. It’s a wonderful organisation and one I am proud to be cycling for! To get an idea of what these funds raised will go towards, see this video of one of my 6 year old fund-raising competitors.  he is setting the bar VERY high!

As part of their Argus drive, Africa Tikkun are asking their riders to raise enough money to send a single child to their Early Childhood Development Centres (ECD) for a year (R2160).  I want to raise the bar and try to send two children to an ECD for a year.  That’s R4320 I need to raise and why I need your support and generosity in realising that.  To make this an extra challenge, I commit to breaking my previous personal best for the Argus (3:47:48). This will be difficult but worth the challenge if it can help raise additional funds. As a further incentive, an anonymous donor has agreed to match each and every Rand donated up to R2500, so long as I break my PB!!

Thus this is a plea for any donations, no matter how small (or big). Thanking you all so much in advance.

Tom

Afrika Tikkun

Charity Default Logo

Afrika Tikkun (AT) was founded in 1994 with the goal of developing and uplifting young people in disadvantaged communities resident in the Republic of South Africa. With like-minded partners, Afrika Tikkun aims to end child poverty and youth unemployment through a holistic approach that begins in early childhood and ends with productive adults accessing the economy. Our approach provides all-inclusive care (nutrition, health and social) services and helps SA’s youth achieve success with a model called Cradle-to-Career 360°, which has earned Afrika Tikkun recognition for being one of the most impactful organisations in South Africa. We operate from four centres in Gauteng and one in Cape Town.
