Personal message
My name is Corlia Mostert and I represent (but am not an employee of) an NPO called The Character Company.
Let me give you some background on my personal reason why I am even creating this page.
In 2013, when my son was 4 years old, my husband committed suicide. I'm sure you can imagine the kind of chaos such a thing caused in the lives of me and my young son. My son was too young to understand why his dad was not coming home and I was too broken to help him understand and to help him heal. We survived somehow for a year and then when my son was 5 years old a fellow widow with a boy the same age as mine, introduced me to The Character Company - this completely changed his dark looking life for the good.
Currently over 70% of kids are growing up in single-parented homes and 4 out of 5 boys have no consistent positive male influence in their lives. No wonder that there are so few "real-men" in our communities any more.
This "pandemic" links directly to the huge issues in SA like gender-based violence, gangsterism and crime, substance abuse, mental disorders and so many teen suicides.
Who/what is The Character Company? TCC is a NPO consisting of 52 mail MENtors who work with 250 boys where there are no dads or any form of positive male figures in their homes. There is currently a waiting list of another 100 boys that desperately need these MENtors in their lives but all of this comes with a cost.
I have therefore decided that the only way I know how to "give back" to The Character Company (as I can't always contribute financially) is to try and help them raise funds so that they can take on those other 100 boys that are currently on the waiting list.
This October I am aiming to collect at least R10 000 for The Character Company so that we can onboard those 100 fatherless boys who so desperately need the love and attention of the MENtors at The Character Company.
We are doing an initiative where donors can run/walk/swim or cycle with us but there is also an opportunity for people to simply donate as they can and that is where this BackaBuddy page comes in.

The Character Company is a long term mentorship programme for young boys growing up with absent fathers - raising boys to be good men. Other than the weekly and monthly programmes, holiday camps and “one-on-one” intervention we also focus on support for single mothers and raising awareness of the impact of absent fathers on our families and society.
