We are a group of friends that are always up for a challenge, the 2021 Skyrun being the latest one. Although we think running up to 100km, unassisted, over the Witteberg Mountain Range might be a fun and exciting challenge, we realise there are many others out there battling challenges far greater than this.

 

We realised this when Mackenzie ‘MightyMack’ Friedman was recently, at the age of four months, diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Mack has been through two rounds of chemo, each time fighting for her life. During her first chemo, she had to be placed on a ventilator so she could breathe and later the doctors induced a coma as she had severe lung infection.

Whilst sedated they discovered a mass in her lung that had to be removed, as the mass started pressing on her heart. At this point her parents effectively kissed her goodbye but, against all odds, she made it through the operation even though a third of her lung had to be removed!

 

After 9 weeks in ICU and a few weeks in the general ward she is currently at home and doing well on ‘maintenance’ chemo. Fortunately for Mack, there are some potential bone marrow matches that we are excited about.

 

Because not all children in similar situations to Mack, are in a position to have medical aid or financial support, we have decided to raise money for children with cancer or a terminal illness.

Rainbows and Smiles is a foundation dedicated to providing emotional, financial and social support to children diagnosed with cancer or a life-threatening disease, and their families and caregivers. The money from your donation will be put to use in a number of ways; either by feeding terminally ill children and their families or social and emotional support by the Rainbows and Smiles team.
