2018 and we off to our first swim !!!!The Madswimmers are at it again and intend to swim approximately 20 – 35 km per day on the weekend of 24 – 25 March 2018 across the Orange River which is the longest river in South Africa. 

The swim will be in aid of #Swim4Sadie an initiative started by Cita and Russell Penn (Sadie’s parents) in memory of Sadie Penn which supports patients with rare diseases & creates awareness about various life threatening rare diseases. #swim4sadie is the swimming division of Rare ACTIVists whereby people can use their mobility to help Rare Disease patients who may not be able to.

It rises in the Drakensberg Mountains in n Lesotho and flows generally w, forming the boundary between Free State and Cape Province. It continues w through the Kalahari and Namib deserts, forming South Africa's border with Namibia. It empties into the Atlantic Ocean at Oranjemund.The river forms part of the international borders between South Africa and Namibia and between South Africa and Lesotho, as well as several provincial borders within South Africa. Except for Upington, it does not pass through any major cities.

The Orange River plays an important role in the South African economy by providing water for irrigation and hydroelectric power. The river was named by Robert Jacob Gordon after the Dutch Royal House. Other names include Gariep River (used by the Khoi people), Groote River or Senqu River (used in Lesotho).
