Update on Legend: Hello wonderful people! Legend is now completely healed! We reached our target and we were even able to buy a fence to create a rehab paddock for him. After two months of therapy, the vet has given him the all-clear. The outcome couldn't have been better. Thank you for your help.

Legend, a three-year-old horse, raised in a neglectful way in Genadendal and left to wander around the countryside, impaled himself on a fence and walked around in excruciating pain for ten days. Nicola Vernon, founder of the sanctuary, found him dying in a ditch on her way from the farm to the village of Greyton. She called a vet who came immediately and managed to stabilize the horse and get him on this feet.

His front right shoulder was swollen and a broken bone fragment was sticking out of a large, infected wound. Appeals for a horsebox went unanswered so Legend was walked the 2 km to the sanctuary with the vet in attendance managing his pain. Intensive nursing and vet care at the sanctuary by Mike Deall, team member, restored him somewhat and he was taken to Caledon Vet Clinic for X-rays.

Consultation with equine specialists, Vetscape, near Franschhoek revealed a slim chance of success if Legend could be operated on at their facility. On Monday 21st October, Legend was taken there and examined by vets, xrayed and scanned. The vets could see no cartilage on which to put plates to help fix the break so they advised euthanasia. However, Nicola asked if they might first anesthetize him and then open up the wound to visually inspect the damage, then euthanase him whilst he was still under if the visual inspection confirmed the findings of the x-ray and sonar. It didn't, there is cartilage there, although very infected so, in consultation with vets in Europe, Legend was operated on. A broken fragment of bone was removed, the wound was stitched and a splinter attached.

A catheter is feeding antibiotics directly to the site as the cartilage is badly infected. Next week, once the infection has been cured, Legend will receive a further operation to install plates. He will never be able to be ridden so he will return to the sanctuary for the rest of his life, with another rescue horse that the sanctuary will find for him, so he can live. free from abuse, loved and protected. Legend, this small, battle-scarred, neglected horse, stands in a luxury facility alongside gleaming, shining, well-muscled thoroughbreds, receiving constant care and attention from vets, vet nurses and grooms. His life matters to him and to us, not because he can run fast, jump fences or make beautiful babies but because he is a brave fighter who simply wants to live.

Greyton Farm Animal Sanctuary

Greyton Farm Animal Sanctuary provides a permanent home on its own 100 acre farm in the Western Cape for over 160 rescued farm animals who have been abandoned, neglected, abused or who have escaped from the farm animal production system. Nearly 100 pigs, together with sheep, cows, geese, goats, chickens, a horse and a duck live a peaceful and protected life. The Sanctuary also runs an advocacy and outreach programme offering humane education and promoting plant-based living.
