South Africa is home to some of the world's best doctors, accountants, teachers, engineers, and other professionals. However, there are still schools with inadequate facilities that lack running water, furniture, and proper sanitation. In 2018, a report highlighted almost 4000 schools with hazardous pit latrines, which led to several deaths.

Gift of the Givers stepped in to help by creating a team to identify schools in need of a solution. After testing various options, we settled on the Pour Flush and VIP solutions from a supplier in Hammarsdale. These toilets eliminate odours, require no main water connections, and are made of high-density polymer with no sharp edges.

Besides the practical benefits, these toilets enhance a child's learning environment and overall well-being. They provide privacy during menstruation, which is essential for young girls who might skip classes without proper facilities. To keep costs down, we carefully consider the number of children, staff, pre-existing toilets, and access to running water before deciding on the number of units to install.

The project is running for just under two years and has already completed 15 schools with more than 100 units installed. With two more installation teams trained, we can complete an average of three schools per month. We have identified several more schools for 2023 and will continue adding more to the list.
