Sandra has MDS (Myelodysplastic syndrome). Fortunately her sister is a match for a bone marrow transplant which the government hospital will pay for.

 

• What’s the challenge? They will only carry out this procedure when her blood work has improved (increased blasts).

 

• What’t the solution? 6 months of Eurolen before a bone marrow transplant.

 

• What’s the issue? The government hospital is not paying for the medication! Sandra’s haematologist has applied countless times this year and each time the request has been rejected.

 

• What’s at stake? There is not sugar coating anything! Without this medication, Sandra will die. She has 3-5 years based on statistics and the likelihood of progression to leukaemia (AML). Sandra has already been fighting this for 2 years.

 

The medication is R6,900/month ($373, GBP295). Eurolen will delay disease progression and Sandra will qualify for a bone marrow transplant the moment her blasts increase as a result. If the transplant is successful, Sandra will be pushed into remission. 

 

Every little bit counts no matter how small! For example, the medication would be covered monthly if:

 

- 100 people donating an average of R69 per month or

- 60 people donating an average of R115 per month or 

- 30 people donating an average of R230 per month or

- 10 people donating an average of R690 per month ($37/ GBP30)

 

Sandra has received life saving treatment through her government hospital in the form of blood transfusions, and injections to boost her white blood cells etc. Unfortunately they have excluded this medication which actually treats the cause, it makes no sense at all! 

 

Eurolen will remain a chronic medication for Sandra unless she goes into remission.
