South Africa has some of best medical scientists and health care professionals in the world who provide excellent care in the face of constant daily challenges. The diminishing pool of registrar posts means that fewer specialists are being trained in South Africa, with catastrophic implications for the future of medical care. Many of us are mobilising to address this in different ways. On the 14th of June, a medical specialist and clinical scientist, Dr June Fabian, will take off at dawn with three friends to ride the Freedom Challenge. A gruelling 2150km off-road self-navigated route across South Africa from umGungundlovu (PMB) to Wellington. Each rider's personal journey contributes to a greater collective  - to give back. Giving back to young, supersmart, highly trained, community service doctors who want to specialise is a start. They are integral to medicine. And our future.
