Latest update: Trev had said he would join me on this crazy journey but managed to injure himself with a stress fracture in his foot, which he is still recovering from. So, its just me running for Rainbows!
I have started running - I am not the quickest and I won’t be the one who runs the furthest (although if I use my "Growth Mindset", you just never know - haha!), but I am finally doing something that may just have a small impact on the lives of seriously ill children.
I plan to run a range of races this year, beginning with a 10km race in Canterbury on Sunday 18th March, followed by a 5mile race on the 15th April in Lowestoft and another couple of 10k races in Folkestone in May and June. Part of my weekly training is taking part in the 5km Parkrun, mainly in Folkestone but also I plan to run one in the New Forest in April. My aim for this year is to train for the Folkestone half marathon at the end of September. Who knows after that?!!
So, why all this sudden interest in running and what difference can it make? My cousin Bonita Suckling constantly inspires me. She lost Jed, her precious son, to cancer. In the time that followed his death, we thought we had lost Bon as well. Somehow, she came back to us, fighting with her every breath, in Jed’s name, to make each day the “funnest day ever”. She set up a charity “Rainbows and Smiles” in order to provide emotional, social and financial support for the children and families who face that terrible journey that only childhood cancer brings.
Bonita runs, swims and cycles miles and miles each year fundraising for families, raising awareness of childhood cancer and encouraging others to join her. I am reaching out on behalf of Bon and her incredible Rainbows and Smiles family for donations to the charity.
Please support my mission this year by donating. The charity is a South African charity (Bon lives there) and supports families in such terrifying circumstances. Every British Pound is currently worth approximately 17 Rand which can really make a difference.
Have a look at the Rainbows and Smiles website, or follow them on Facebook for updates on how their fundraising efforts bring smiles to children with cancer.
Thank you.
