Personal message
I am a Zimbabwe farmer's wife, and when my husband passed away in August 2009, I decided to cycle the Argus in his memory. I had just started cycling a couple of months before he died, and I rode the Argus 7 months later, turning 60, 3 days before the race. It took me 7 hours and 20 minutes to finally finish!
I continued to enter the Argus every year and improved my time the next year by nearly 2 hours. I am not a strong cyclist - I am a plodder with staying power, and try to always finish what I have started. I am happy if I achieve a time of under 6 hours! Last year I was a member of a team of 11 riders, cycling 450km up the Mekong Delta from Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam to Siem Riep in Cambodia, to raise funds and awareness for the Victoria Foundation, a UK medical charity.
I have 4 grandchildren aged between 7 and 2, and I am acutely aware of the importance that a safe and responsibly-led Africa will hold for their future.
The Charity: I am honoured to represent Umthombo Wesizwe ( www.uwfund.org ) in this year's Argus. I strongly believe the way forward in South Africa - and all of Africa - is to build strong, ethical and responsible leaders, beginning with the children. This is the objective and mission of the Umthombo Wesizwe Project.
Please help me by making a donation to Umthombo Wesizwe via this secure site. Every donation helps, however large or small, Tax receipts are available for all donors.

Umthombo Wesizwe Childrens Project

Umthombo Wesizwe (which means “Spring of the Nation”) is a Non-Profit organisation, whose purpose is to equip children between the ages of 11-15 years with skills to become ethical leaders, be proud of who they are while respecting and valuing the diversity of others around them. The programme is spread over a 3 year period and is designed to enhance experiential learning through camp-based workshops, monitoring of their individual progress and community projects. Via their participation in these community projects the children become role models to many around them thus leveraging the impact of the programme.
