My name is Damian Wasowicz.  In 2010 I suffered a traumatic brain injury in an horrific cycling accident. 

Whilst cycling with my two brothers on a training ride in a very safe area in 2010, I too sustained a brain injury after being hit by a utility vehicle head on.  My survival rate was under 10% just after the accident, with the blessed support of my family & friends, I managed to survive this ordeal to tell my story. 

Surviving and living with a traumatic brain injury is not only difficult for the survivor, but also complicated for family and friends.  Headway Gauteng provides an amazing lighthouse through various support programmes to survivors as well as family and friends.

People who sustain a traumatic head injury (or acquired brain injury like a stroke, aneurysm or brain tumor) usually go into hospital, from there they go to a rehabilitation facility and then from there home.  The family generally have this 'new' person to deal with, with little to no support.  Headway Gauteng offers this amazing lighthouse for families in this situation with the services they offer. 

This is why I’ll be riding as a part of the Headway Heroes this year, and have championed this cause since 2016, to raise awareness and funds for this important charity organisation.

I am so fortunate to be in the situation I am now that I intend on cycling in various cycle races to raise funds as well as awareness for this wonderful organisation.  Please help me to do so, your support will mean the world of difference to those that are not as fortunate as I am.
