For many years, Ferg has done the Dusi Canoe Marathon, but for some reason, last year, he decided to enter the Comrades Marathon too.  Being the fool that I am, I had fomo when I found out and decided to enter at the last minute.

 In September, 2021, Fergus’s nephew, Harry O’Mullane (4 years old) was diagnosed with leukeamia (A.L.L.). Given the good news, in November, last year, that he was in remission, his parents, were caught off-guard in March, when they were told that he had relapsed.

 After another round of chemo in hospital, Harry was sent home.  During this time, his parents waited for medical aid to make a decision about a drug that Harry urgently needed, to keep him in remission.  Unfortunately, after 3 weeks, the drug was turned down and he relapsed again. Through all of this, Harry has been absolutely incredible.  

So, brave and strong – beyond admirable for a little boy of his age. Running Comrades this year has now become a way for us to not only “run for Harryman”, but also bring awareness to childhood cancer as well as the mental well-being of the parents going through this difficult time.  Harry has been so mentally strong throughout all of this.

And let’s face it, if he can do that while his body takes such a knock from the cancer and treatment, then we can certainly run the Comrades through any aches and pains! Harry, this one is most-certainly for you! #hopeforharryman
