Personal message

Hi, My name is Neil and i am a spastic quadriplegic from birth. I have limited use off my arms and hands and no use of my legs, i am wheelchair bound.. Just because i am in a wheelchair doesn't mean life stops. Living in a wheelchair comes with challenges but most of the limits our community faces have been manufactured and perpetuated by stigmas and stereotypes.

Individuals living in wheelchairs can do anything and be anyone if we are offered the correct support and representation.

Many people look at those in a wheelchair as fragile, but that's not true. A lot of getting comfortable with being in a wheelchair is being confident about who you are as a person and not falling (victim) to the stereotype of people being in a wheelchair.

I started playing Boccia (pronounced Botcha) end September 2022 a sport for the physically disabled and enterd my first competition in March 2023 for my Western Province colors, I proudly took 2nd place in individuals and my team took 3rd place. This has earned me a spot on the South African team, but to be chosen i once again had to first play my trials which i did and succeeded.

The South African Championships will be taking place from the 20th to the 24 of March 2024 in Bloemfontein, therefore i am asking you as the Public to please help me to make my dreams come true and to reach my goal, to proudly represent our contry at this championships for the disabled.

Thanking you in anticipation
Neil Wilken

SASAPD BOCCIA CHAMPIONSHIPS Campaign

Charity Default Logo

Hello, I'm Neil, a spastic quadriplegic since birth, confined to a wheelchair with limited arm and hand function. Despite the challenges, life doesn't stop here. Many of our limitations stem from societal stigmas rather than inherent incapacity.

Living in a wheelchair doesn't equate to fragility; it's about embracing confidence and defying stereotypes. I've found empowerment through sports, particularly Boccia, where I earned recognition at the Western Province level and secured a place on the South African team after successful trials.

Now, I aim to compete in the South African Championships in March 2024, but I need your support to realize this dream. Together, let's challenge perceptions and champion inclusivity. Thank you for considering my journey.

Warm regards,
Neil Wilken
