PLEASE SUPPORT MIKE CORMACK RIDING THE ARGUS CYCLE TOUR TO RAISE FUNDS FOR CHOC CHILDRENS CANCER FOUNDATION

 

I have been awed and humbled by the amazing response to this appeal. Including what has gone direct to CHOC the total is now in excess of R70 000. Thank you for your amazing generosity. As I know there is more to come I am raising the bar to an overall total of R80 000.

Thanks to Blackberry and Gabi we have a beautiful Blackberry Curve to help raise funds. We will advise shortly how you can participate.

I was diagnosed with lung cancer in June 2008, and underwent treatment for 4 months. With all the advantages of easy access to treatment, great medical care and amazing support of my friends and family I a now enjoying good health.

 I would like to play a part in making some of these advantages available to children diagnosed with cancer who are not as fortunate as I have been.

As a keen cyclist with 16 successive Argus Cycling Tours behind me, I did not let cancer nor the storm-strength south-easter prevent me from riding number 17 on 8 March 2009 and completed it in 4h 20m. I rode in the CHOC cycling shirt and shorts to create awareness for the CHOC cause. CHOC is a registered welfare organization and donations are tax-deductible. CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation

CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation SA is the only organisation in South Africa that provides comprehensive countrywide support for children with cancer and other life-threatening blood disorders, and their families. CHOC has a head office in Johannesburg, six regional offices, two branches, and 12 accommodation facilities close to treatment centres. CHOC relies heavily on corporate sponsors, donations from groups or individuals wanting to make a difference in the lives of these little ones.

Their comprehensive support improves the welfare and quality of care of children with cancer and offers families a wide range of psychosocial services and practical support such as counselling, free accommodation, free transport and transport fund to ensure that no child abandons treatment due to the family not affording transport costs, food parcels as they recognise the financial difficulties families often face and parent to parent support groups. CHOC also plays a leading advocacy role and promotes early detection to save lives nationally.
