Personal message

Our 3-year-old son MG Botha was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in May 2023.

To manage this immune disease is a daily challenge, as there are 42 factors that affects Blood Glucose (BG), thus managing carbohydrate intake is not the only factor influencing BG. Other factors influencing BG includes medication, outside temperature, activity etc.

For any diabetic to manage their BG levels it is a rollercoaster ride, having to manage it for a toddler adds another challenge as they do not yet understand the signs their body gives when the BG levels are high or low.

Thus to manage it as a parent it means regular monitoring which includes waking up at nigh to check the BG levels. His teachers at kindergarten are doing an exceptional job in supporting us and him in managing his diabetes - from checking his BG levels and injecting insulin when needed whilst also looking after the pearls of other parents.

Unfortunately, diabetes adds to the financial expenses, the food is more expensive, the insulin costs involved and to monitor the BG levels all adds up to substantial amounts, which we currently cannot absorb.

Funds sought will be used to buy a Miao Miao device and 1 years supply of Libre Freestyle sensors.

The Miao Miao device along with the Libre Freestyle sensor give BG readings every 5 minutes, thus helping to more effective management of highs and lows. Cost breakdown at current prices Miao Miao - R4250 (Once off every 4 years), Libre Freestyle sensor that lasts 14 days is R1088 x 26.

This fund raising will enable us and his teachers to more effectively manage his BG ensuring that he is healthy boy enjoying a life to the fullest.

Our son is brave little bugger always managing a smile through the daily insulin shots, pricks and needles. With highs and lows, he does react emotional, but luckily nothing that hug a from mommy/ daddy/teacher cannot fix.

To all the other parents and T1D warriors stay strong and stay the course.

For everybody that assist with a contribution – Thank you for making this journey a little bit easier and helping MG to be a healthy young boy

Diabetic Management MG Botha 3years Campaign

Charity Default Logo

The appeal highlights the challenges faced by the Botha family after their 3-year-old son, MG, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in May 2023. Managing the condition for a toddler involves constant monitoring due to various influencing factors. Financial strain arises from increased expenses, including specialized food, insulin, and monitoring tools. The family seeks funds for a Miao Miao device and a one-year supply of Libre Freestyle sensors to enhance BG management. MG's resilience is noted, and contributions are thanked for making his journey towards a healthy life a little easier.
