Personal message

Hi, my name is Megan Harrington-Johnson and I will be swimming from Ospadaletti in Italy to Monte Carlo, Monaco on Saturday 6 August 2016. This is a distance of approximately 25km’s which I intend to do in one go.

I have a background in competitive swimming having grown up in and around various swimming pools, but until 3 years ago the furthest I had swum had been about 6km in a 50m pool. When I stopped competitive swimming in 2005 I never in my wildest dreams thought I would be swimming distances in excess of 30km!

I joined Madswimmer in 2014 after an accident in 2013 left me with a broken back and therefore allegedly unable to do any other type of sport. Since then I have swum in some of the wildest places on earth, including the summit of Mount Kenya, the Swahili Channel and across Lake Tanganyika.

This Italy2Monaco challenge is close to my heart as I am organising it and have handpicked the charity to which the funds will go myself.

Just the One Foundation is an incredible organisation started by some friends of mine who came to the conclusion that if they each just gave up one beer a month they could put a child through school. They now have 4 children from disadvantaged backgrounds whom they are paying for so as to enable them to get an education and ultimately help make South Africa a better place. This really is indicative of the Madswimmer ethos….if we can help just one person we have done a lot!

Please help in putting another child through school. Just R100 will go a very long way.
