Hi there,                                                             

Some people may be of the opinion that competing in an Ironman competition is quite selfish. Their opinion may be based on the amount of time that a person spends in training, the money spent on equipment, entry fees, supplements, etc. And lastly that the gain is personal only: the glory of the finish, the personal satisfaction of the achievement, and the pleasure found within doing sport.

Having said that, and after completion of 5 half and 2 full Ironman's (and a few other endurance events), I have to admit that life without regular training and participating would be so hard and frustrating. So: to make it less about me and my needs and wants, I have found a wonderful worthy cause to support, while doing what I love to do.                                                     

Smile Foundation                                                            

Smile Foundation is a non-profit organization that brings people together for the purpose of providing expert surgical intervention, creating greater social involvement and enabling sensible corporate social investment - to make a difference in the lives of children with facial anomalies.       We offer holistic care to transform the lives of these children who are threatened with rejection by society.     Smile Foundation is about meaningfully connecting people to bring about new opportunities, new futures, with the result being - new lives.                                                    

I have a soft place in my heart for children with facial defects: I have been lucky enough to be able to splash on some make up and continue without stares and pointed fingers. When you have a cleft palate no amount of make up will do the trick. Thanks to our plastic surgeon (who also found a way to combine giving back while doing what he loves), a "normal" face and life and a world of opportunities await these children.
