My name is Lindi Sithembile Skhosana and I was born and raised in a township called Moloto in the Mpumalanga province. When I started my academic journey, I did was not able to secure any financial aid. However, my father was able to pay my fees, which I greatly appreciated. After completing my honors degree in 2019, I decided to take a gap year where I can properly decide the field in psychology that I wanted to pursue. During that time, I volunteered at a hospital and worked in schools. While working in schools, I noticed how many children with learning barriers were unable to services of an educational psychologist, which led them to struggle reaching their academic milestones. Hence I decided to pursue a career in educational psychology.
Getting accepted into the psychology masters program is a difficult and emotionally taxing journey as the competition is very high. This is why I was so overjoyed when I got accepted into the 2023 masters program at the University of the Witwatersrand. Upon accepting the offer, I did not have any secured funding, and I was still applying for bursaries. My father offered to pay for my fees, unfortunately, he fell ill and then he lost his job. I did not have anyone to pay for my tuition and the bursaries that I applied for, rejected me. I didn't give up as I knew that I have goals that I wanted to achieve and this was a once in a lifetime opportunity for me.
When I applied for masters in educational psychology, I had a goal. My goal was to work hand in hand with schools in townships to identify learners with learning barriers so we can find schools that can better cater for their individual needs. I cannot reach my goals if I do not complete my studies. I am currently registered for the 2024 academic year, however, I am owing the university. The funds raised will directly go into my student account and they will assist me with tuition fees.
