Personal message
I lost my right leg, above the knee, in 2020 after a motorcycle accident. I used to be an active person, with a love for sports, motorcycles and socializing.
After my accident, I was determined to take my life back, to become the best version of "me" again, but unfortunately I have been struggling with my mobility for the past 3.5 years due to the fact that we just cannot find a suitable solution in Namibia with regards to a proper fitting socket for my prosthesis.
I have had 2 different knees, 9 sockets and a second amputation in the interim, all to try and get myself mobile again. Initially my stump was too long and the initial knee recommended by the orthotist resulted in extreme pain when walking. I was then advised that my stump was too long and had to be shortened by 10cm, which I agreed to, and then proved to be incorrect. After several attempts to get a new socket fitted properly, I then changed Orthotists, and a new knee was recommended.
It has helped, to some extend, but with the constant volume change in my stump, the result is the replacement of my socket every 6 months, which comes at a cost of about 40K ZAR per socket. With a limited medical aid benefit, of 72K ZAR every 2 years, this becomes an extremely costly exercise.
Walking with sockets that do not quite fit, results in cramps, pain, blisters and ultimately frustration - causing emotional distress - to the point that I totally withdraw from social life, and look for every excuse not to have to put my leg on for the day - this is extremely depressing.
After some research done, we found a solution, which is not available in Namibia, but can be done in South Africa - it is called "Osseointegration".
Osseointegration is the direct structural and functional connection between living bone and the surface of a load-bearing artificial implant. In other words, a "rod" would be planted directly into my femur, onto which my prosthesis would be attached, and which will result in no more sockets required for the rest of my life.
Unfortunately this comes at an extremely high cost, which is not covered by my medical aid.
I am therefore presenting my case, requesting for assistance to help me raise funds for this operation - The cost of the operation is 800K ZAR, but has to be supplemented by a micro-processing knee and foot, which comes at an additional cost of 1.2M ZAR - therefore a total cost of 2M ZAR.
Being able to have this surgery done, would provide me with an opportunity to be myself again, to claim my life back, to become mobile and live every day with passion and gratitude.
I would be extremely grateful if you would consider supporting my cause.
Sincerely,
Jennine van Jaarsveld
