Personal message
I am a marine scientist, and I will be taking part in the Oceans 8 Charity swim to raise funds for the WILDTRUST. I currently work for the WILDOCEANS programme, in a team who are working to secure protection for sharks and rays in South Africa.
I am challenging myself to swimming 1 mile, and I have chosen to dedicate this mile to the critically endangered bowmouth guitarfish, Rhina ancylostomus. This is a very distinctive “shark-like” species of ray. This animal is valuable in the trade and is harvested for its high-value fins and its thorns used for jewellery.
It is found in South Africa, along the KZN coast in shallow waters around reefs, particularly in iSimangaliso, Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks. This gentle animal can grow to 2.7m in length and is a special and unique sighting for SCUBA divers lucky enough to see it.
I would like to encourage others to choose a threatened marine species that they are passionate about and challenge themselves by entering the 1-mile event, dedicating their swim to their chosen species.
Simply create a fundraising profile on Backabuddy, share some interesting facts on your special species, and aim to raise a minimum of R850. This will go a long way in helping WILDOCEANS continue to make a difference to marine conservation in South Africa.

Oceans 8 Charity Swim NPC

The Oceans 8 Charity Swim is South Africa's first warm water ocean swim of its kind, exclusively for charity.
It has been started by 5 charities (DUCT, NSRI, Project Rhino, Singakwenza and WILDTRUST) to provide a reliable and sustainable flow of funding to deserving non-profits with a footprint in KwaZulu-Natal, to support their work and allow them to continue to engage in and deliver on projects which have an impact and influence on education, environment, community development and upliftment for those most in need.
The inaugural Oceans 8 Charity Swim will be held on the 16th & 17th (18th) June 2023 at the Durban Undersea Club, with the 5 founding charities benefitting from the 8 Mile swimmers, and 9 invitational charities benefitting from the 1 Mile swimmers.
