Personal message

I am Janine Smythe a 33 year old mom of one amazing ten year old boy named Keagan, engaged to the love of my life Kelsey Hanger. I teach Life Sciences at Cornwall Hill College and have a passion for team sports such as hockey and touch rugby. Three years ago I started trail running as a hobby.

Last year I completed my first Comrades Marathon and decided to do it again this year to give the up run a go to see what the beast would be like in reverse.

My training was going well up untill April when I got sick and had no idea what was wrong, I passed out the night before the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon and decided not to run the race. I was a by stander as I watched my incredible friends finish their race. The experience was both frustrating and enlightening as I felt empathy for those who could take part.

I went from doctor to doctor and eventually got diagnosed with a virus. During this time my comrades dream slipped further and further away from me, since then I have started to feel better and with the consent of my doctor I have decided to give the Comrade Up run a go.

It took me a while to decide wether or not to take on the challenge, knowing I am not as prepared as I had hoped to be. This is why I’ve decided to make the run about more than just completing the race.

I am going to run for Rainbows and Smiles in the hope of raising money for children who arn’t as fortunate as you and I. I want to run for those who can’t as I couldn’t even imagine the hardships they endure and the bravery it takes to fight their battles.

Please join me in raising funds for these incredible children. Together we can help them in their fight against Cancer.

Rainbows and Smiles Foundation

The mission of Rainbows and Smiles is to provide emotional, social and financial support to families and caregivers in need when a child or children of that family is diagnosed with a life threatening illness such as cancer. In addition, Rainbows and Smiles encourage childhood cancer awareness to educate in the hope of promoting early detection.
