Personal message

The Comrades Marathon was established nearly 100 years ago to honour those soldiers who had fallen in the Great War (as the First World War was then known).

Those children who are diagnosed with life-threatening cancer face a Great War of their own. Comrades runners are often and easily described as “heroes”, but we aren’t really heroes, we put up with a greater or lesser amount of discomfort for one day – those children who are suffering from cancer have no way of stopping, they have no bailers’ bus to step onto if things get too tough, no club tents with chairs to collapse into when a cold beer seems like a better option than continuing – they must simply fight on, come what may.

So if my run in 2019 can help any children who are suffering every day to have a few more rainbows and a lot more smiles by raising money to support their caregivers, pay medical expenses and provide safe places where they can have fun and be supported, then that is something that I want to do.
