Personal message

Please help to protect the elderly and vulnerable who are unable to access the home- and club based services in the Cape Town township centres of Ikamva Labantu. The organisation must urgently provide food, hygiene packages and medication in 1200 senior citizen's homes. With R 100 000 (5600 USD, 58 000 SEK) Ikamva Labantu can support 100 seniors for one month.

Ikamva Labantu is one of Cape Town’s largest community organisations assisting senior citizens in the townships. It is highly important that the elderly practice “social distancing” to avoid getting infected with the coronavirus. The need for funding is urgent. Please partner with Ikamva Labantu to slow down the spread of the virus. Thanks to Ikamva Labantu’s well-established systems and extensive footprint across the townships, the organisation is able to access many senior citizens in a short period of time.

As Ikamva Labantu keeps in contact with the elders, it also provides a platform to give important information about how to stay safe and act in situations, for example, funerals.

In the early 1960s, Helen Lieberman and other courageous activists responded to the unjust conditions of South African Apartheid by setting up survival initiatives in the Western Cape. In 1992, the coordination of these initiatives was formalised and Ikamva Labantu, meaning “Future of The People”, was launched as a non-governmental and non-profit organisation. Ikamva Labantu’s work focuses on early childhood development, the well-being of older persons and after-school initiatives that keep children safe and off the streets.
