Hi guys!
Through my involvement with Mamelani Projects, I learnt about Yiza Ekhaya, a soup kitchen in Khayelitsha which feeds, cares for and offers a safe place for approximately 250 children in the local community. This work was started by 62 year old Mickey Winefred Linda (also known in her community a Nompilo, which loosely translates as “care giver”). At the time, Mickey was a domestic worker and the only resource she had was her pension grant that she receives from Government. Roughly 20 years ago she decided, with the little that she had, to start a soup kitchen in her area. (For more info on Yiza Ekhaya, please click on the following link: https://www.facebook.com/yizaehkaya/)
I was so deeply touched by Mickey's selfless love for others that I have decided to support her in her incredible efforts to serve her community! I have always admired people who go out and do what they feel they are called to do, despite the fact that they have no idea where the provision would come from… Mickey is one of those people.
To celebrate Mickey's life as a champion and true heroin in her community, and to raise funds for this amazing project, I have decided to climb Table Mountain (via Platteklip Gorge) 63 times in the next 5 months – between 6 February and 6th of July, when Mickey will be turning 63! Come join me and let’s make this a group effort! I will be championing this project counting each time that I climb, but your hikes will also count towards the total!
For those out there who will not be hiking with us, please support us by making a donation towards Mickey’s incredible project – and rest assured that every cent raised goes toward feeding a child in need.
Please help me support Mickey in the wonderful work that she is doing!
