In the space of two weeks, we have become home to twenty piglets who have been born at the sanctuary after we rescued their pregnant mothers.  This was unplanned and unexpected but, sometimes, that is the nature of the work we do.

Greyton Farm Animal Sanctuary runs a Pigs to Plants Programme in which we encourage backyard informal pig farmers to surrender their pigs to us in exchange for us planting a market garden that has a variety of fruit, vegetables, herbs and nuts. We help maintain these gardens and ensure a steady income for the farmers by assisting with supplying their goods to local outlets.

One recent project saw us save a sow named Elize, who was about to be used for restocking proposes. Elize was in the very early stages of her pregnancy and welcomed nine little ones into the world after she arrived at the Sanctuary.  Elize joins Rita, who had escaped her captivity and was running wild in residential Swellendam. Rita gave birth to eleven piglets.

All these babies need to be sterilised as this not only ensures they do not reproduce but also it stops in-season large female pigs from mounting smaller pigs, with the risk of injury or even death. It also decreases the chance of various gynaecological cancers, which is quite common in pigs who come from these backgrounds.

All twenty will be surgically sterilized under sedation at Caledon Vet Clinic at around R1700 per male and R1900 per female.   We urgently need to raise R36,000 to meet these costs.  These piglets have had the rarest of opportunities - to be born into a sanctuary, where they will be cared for and live in total freedom for the rest of their natural lives.  Please help us celebrate these beautiful beings by giving them the support they need to have long, healthy, happy lives.
