94.7 Cycle Challenge
- Public Event
- Date: November 16, 2014
- Category: Cycling
The Ride for a Purpose campaign has proven to provide an incomparable platform for cyclists to create awareness about personal causes that are close to their hearts, and this year is no different.
Over R12.5 million was raised for charity last year and this year the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge is encouraging riders and charities to get involved, so they can top last year’s massive success.
This year, Joburg’s favourite race has reserved 8000 spots for charities to register their teams and for individuals who want to ride for their favourite charity.
Please join us and Ride for OUR purpose, or simply contribute towards our initiative by pledging your support through this website.
The initiative:
The initiative was founded in August 2011. The objective is to make a positive impact in the lives of members of our local community. We provide them with bicycles that they can use to get to work and back, thus saving them money that could rather be used to put food on the table for them and their families.
An appeal was made via a local internet cycling forum, www.TheHubSA.co.za, for any unwanted bikes and parts that could be used to build up working bikes that could be donated. The response was fantastic and the generosity of the public at large has been amazing
To date, we have donated more than 30 bicycles to low-income members of the community in and around Johannesburg and further afield as well. Bikes are distributed to individuals on a per-nomination basis.
Why we need funding:
Currently we face various financial challenges that are impeding our ability to assist these grassroots bicycle-commuters. To date we have been funding the initiative in our personal capacities, but this is becoming increasingly difficult. We currently operate from a residential complex, with no garage or workshop.
- We need to rent a workshop with storage facilities.
- We need to buy tools and other equipment to effectively build and repair the bikes.
- We need to buy spare parts that are difficult to come by via donations.
- Many existing recipients need their bikes maintained with parts which are hard to come by from donors – like chains, cassettes and other drivetrain components.
We are looking to increase the initiative’s footprint and engage in a myriad of other activities such as:
- Provide a free bicycle repair service in underprivileged communities. For this we need to procure spare parts and tools.
- Provide local riders with helmets and high-visibility equipment.
- Develop the sport of cycling within the community by giving the riders access to competitive cycling and mountain biking events but we need funds to pay for event entry fees.
