Giving makes us happier.

Research has shown that spending money on ourselves does not significantly increase our sense of happiness or wellbeing. A Harvard Business School study suggests that giving to others is directly correlated with an increased sense of happiness. The Harvard researchers write: "Happier people give more and giving makes people happier, such that happiness and giving may operate in a positive feedback loop."

My brother suffered all his life with rare conditions and it made me realize how much other people care, and support families going through a testing time. We have made so many friends in the hospital and followed their personal paths to recovery, and sadly, sometimes we had to say goodbye to some of those patients, that became or brothers and sisters.

People look at you strange when you mention illnesses like childhood Cancer, Strokes, lung diseases and all forms of Auto Immune diseases. But reality is that parents around the world daily has to go through tough times, looking at their children having to receive extremely expensive and painful treatment.

Research costs a lot of money, and sometimes time is against you. Parents often don’t have the financial means to cover treatments available in South Africa, and most important it’s the whole family that is trying their best, financially and emotionally, to get their child treated. A parent will never give up on hope for a cure.

You might think that your small donation won’t make a difference, BUT every small donation received fills a gap that needs to covered.

That’s my ultimate goal to not safe the problems we face in everyday life, trying to cure patients, but to add a smile for as long as we can to a family in a desperate situation.

I truly hope swimming the Midmar Mile, and contributing to Rainbows and Smiles will help make a child's life with cancer a little happier.
