Dante's journey began on December 10, 2014, when he was diagnosed with a rare heart defect known as Tetralogy of Fallot, commonly referred to as the "blue baby," just 35 days after his birth. The challenges escalated when, in addition to his heart condition, Dante was also diagnosed with Trisomy 21, more commonly known as Down syndrome.
Initially, the family focused on addressing Dante's heart condition, enduring a series of unbearable tests. Dante's weight loss during his hospital stay led to his placement on a lengthy waiting list for surgery, labeled as number 245,000. Undeterred, his family tirelessly sought sponsors and donations, facing a year-long, painful journey.
In a twist of fate, Dante's mother received a call from a generous individual offering sponsorship for her son's surgery. Overwhelmed with shock and gratitude, she silently thanked God. The sponsor provided clear instructions via SMS, covering all expenses for Dante's cardiac clinic attendance and subsequent tests.
Dante's first open-heart surgery was a pivotal moment for the family. An agonizing 10-hour wait ended with uncertainty as to the cause of the extended surgery duration. When Dante returned to ICU, the surgeon explained the unexpected change of plan due to discovering that the Pulmonary vein required more urgent repair than initially thought. Remarkably, Dante had lived to his age despite the severity of his case, astonishing even the experienced surgeon.
Post-surgery, Dante's recovery progressed well, reaching a point where he was set to be discharged. However, a sudden turn of events occurred when Dante started coughing intensely. Despite initial joy, the family faced the devastating news that Dante's lung had collapsed. Rushed back to ICU, he spent days on a ventilator, during which a crucial oversight in care led to gangrene in his foot.
Frantically researching and advocating for his well-being, Dante's family prevented amputation but left the hospital 75 days later with a broken heart as Dante lost his foot due to surgery complications. Two years later, Dante developed Vitiligo on his face and joints, adding to the challenges he faced.
Dante, unable to walk or crawl, relies on his tummy to move. Despite the pressing need for intense physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and orthopedic assessments, the hospital's assistance has been limited to monthly visits, which are logistically challenging for the family.
Moreover, Dante's reliance on processed foods and diapers, stemming from an underdeveloped thyroid at birth, further underscores the need for specialized care. The family's heartfelt wish is for Dante to attend a special school that can cater to his unique needs, fostering his growth and development.
To those touched by Dante's story, the family extends a plea for assistance, hoping that compassion and support will enable Dante to overcome the hurdles he faces. May God bless those who lend a helping hand.
