Hearing Again Campaign
Greetings all
My name is Demi Muller, and I am a deaf student aspiring to make a difference. Currently studying psychology and French at the University of Western Cape, I grew up in Cape Town, South Africa and moved frequently with my family to be closer to the special skills school I attended at the time. Diagnosed with deafness in both ears at the age of two, I underwent cochlear implant surgery on both ears to improve my hearing.
I started attending Carel du Toit at two years old so that my speech wouldn't be delayed. This decision had a significant impact on my life as
it enabled me to communicate with both deaf and hearing people effectively.
As I grew older, I excelled in my classes, thanks to the education I received and my determination to succeed. Despite financial difficulties, my mother worked tirelessly to fundraise for my cochlear implants, and I am immensely grateful for her efforts. I always wanted to repay her for it, so I focused on my studies and career goals to provide my family with a better life.
Unfortunately, I lost the cochlear implant on my left ear at Gordon's Bay Main Beach, and despite extensive efforts, I haven't been able to retrieve it. Inspired by my mother's perseverance, I am fundraising for a new cochlear implant. I plan to have bake sales on my university, sell food in my community, and request small donations from fellow students. The cochlear implant includes a sound processor, a battery, a coil, and a magnet.
Any contribution towards my R200,000 goal would be appreciated, as hearing has enabled me to achieve great things despite my disability, and I can only continue to prosper if I can hear well.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story.
Sincerely,
Demi Muller
