World Spay Day is an international day of action to promote the sterilisation of pets, community cats and street dogs as a way to save animals’ lives. It takes place each year on the last Tuesday of February. World Spay Day this year will be on 27 February 2018.

Throughout the month of February — Spay/Neuter Awareness Month — our aim is to decrease the number of unsterilised animals. The core problem with the overpopulation of animals in our impoverished communities, are unsterilised animals. The poorer communities cannot afford veterinary costs and so they are unable to sterilise their animals which leads to more unwanted puppies that end up in Animal Welfare organisations. The majority of the impoverished people that approach us for help, want to sterilise their animals, but funds is always the biggest hurdle and we simply cannot help everyone without funding. A female dog can have up to three litters in a year with an average litter size of seven puppies. One female and her babies can theoretically create 67,000 puppies in six years!

If we can raise R15 000 in the month of February, we can prevent a minimum of 350 unwanted puppies this month! That means 350 less animals that will end up on Animal Welfare organisations, 350 less animals that will each produce another 3 litters of puppies in a year!
