SOS!! Help Save the Soul of Sea Point
The triangular block, where the Sea Point Fire Station stands, is arguably the most iconic civic space in Sea Point. Besides the Fire Station, the block has two other buildings which are all protected due to their high heritage significance.
A developer recently applied to Heritage Western Cape (HWC), the provincial body responsible for protecting Western Cape’s built heritage, to demolish one of these protected buildings.
The Sea Point Fresnaye Bantry Bay Ratepayers & Residents Association (SFB) opposed the application, as did the Simon van der Stel Foundation, and the City of Cape Town.
Sadly, our collective pleas fell on deaf ears. HWC issued a demolition permit for the building, without any conditions – a 9-storey building can now be built in its place!
The SFB, together with the Simon Van der Stel Foundation, will appeal this HWC decision and will fight to save this much-loved site by hiring professional Heritage Specialists to draft the appeal. Unlike the developer, we are a voluntary organisation reliant on donations and sponsorships in order to finance this type of appeal.
All residents of our greater Sea Point area, and indeed all Capetonians who love their city, should donate so we can mount a strong defence against the destruction of the soul of Sea Point.
If our appeal should fail, and unconditional demolition approval is granted, then no sites of heritage value in Sea Point, and Cape Town too, will be safe from the same fate in the future.
We will save the soul, history and heritage of Sea Point and surrounds for our community and children to experience.
The funds will be used to secure 2 professional Heritage specialists to assist us with the appeal against the Heritage Western Cape. The rest of the SFB Planning Committee are volunteering their services.
