Personal message

his is the first year that Mamelani has entered the Argus. We have a 20-person-strong team of superstars who are putting themselves to the test at The Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour – the World’s largest timed cycle race. At best, I could call myself an aspiring cyclist, but I have wanted to get bike-fit for years now after experiencing the joy and freedom of being on my bike. So cycling alongside 19 Mamelani Movers was an opportunity I was not going to miss!

As the leader of the organisation, I have been through many ups and downs – there have been many steep hills to climb as well as moments of joy when we see first-hand the impact of our interventions. I have learned so much from Mamelani’s 10-year long journey about what it takes to overcome the impossible – and really, it is about believing in what you do! 

On some of my recent training cycles I have been huffing and aching, and realising that I still have a serious amount of training to do before the Argus! It seems I may need to work some fitness miracles in this next month. I really don’t know how, but I know I can do it! As I write this, I realise that this is what our work at Mamelani is about – how much further you can go in your life when someone believes in you!
