Bryce Carter’s New Chapter

On 26 December Bryce, 20, was enjoying a day out with his family when he fell off his bicycle and severed his spinal cord. He has been cycling since he was 3 years old and he wasn’t doing anything crazy or risky or anything he hadn’t done before; it was a completely freak accident.

Bryce’s break is a ‘complete break’, in medical terms, between the T10 and T12 vertebrae which means he has lost all feeling and the use of his legs. The paralysis starts around the belly button area. He will now be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Thankfully he did not suffer any head injury and his upper body is in perfect working order.

He finished his schooling at Wynberg Boys' High School, Cape Town in 2021. He spent the next 2 years working in the cycling manufacturing industry, specifically working with carbon fibre. He had just resigned from his job and used his savings to enrol in a yachting course and had plans to work and travel in Europe as soon as he could. Bryce will now have to rethink things and find a new path and career to pursue.

He is currently in hospital recovering from surgery where rods were inserted into his lower spine to stabilize the area. He needs to learn some basic body functions, specifically how to sit and roll over before he can be moved to a rehabilitation facility where he will spend 6-8 weeks learning to adapt and use his body in a different way.

Through this all Bryce remains positive and is talking about what he is going to do once he is mobile again. His life goals remain unchanged although the path to get there may look a little different.

This fund is for Bryce’s friends, family and community to encourage him and help launch this new and unexpected chapter of his life. His immediate needs are intensive residential rehab, a wheelchair and other mobility aids, a complete bathroom renovation at home and a modified car. There are also medical expenses and there will be ongoing physiotherapy after that as he learns how to use his body in a whole new way.

This fund will remain open until the end of March and all donations will be paid directly to Bryce.
