I am Samantha, the proud mother of Authumn-Reese, a vibrant 12-year-old seventh-grade learner who recently discovered she is profoundly deaf in her left ear.
Towards the end of 2022, Authumn began noticing a significant decline in her ability to hear sounds through her left ear. In the early months of 2023, our family visited the audiologist, unveiling the heartbreaking revelation that Authumn has lost all hearing in her left ear.
This unexpected turn of events can be attributed to the aftermath of COVID-19. Determined to find a solution, we explored the possibility of a Cochlear Implant, only to face the harsh reality that our medical aid no longer covers this essential procedure. Fast forward to the present, our Audiologist has recommended a two-way hearing aid for Authumn, as a regular hearing aid would not suffice. However, our medical aid falls short in covering the entire cost of this crucial device.
The impact on Authumn's life has been profound. Struggling to cope in the classroom, her academic performance has suffered, and the once-outspoken and friendly child has become withdrawn due to her hearing loss.
