Ange takes on Ironman South Africa

Dear Friends
Not long to go till I take on my first full distance Ironman (South Africa) on the 14th April - a pure beast of a challenge!
It's a 3,8km sea swim [with shark search helicopters of all things] along with a 2,000 athlete swim start – pure carnage, a 180km bike ride and then finishing it off with a 42km marathon and all to be done within the 17-hour cut off time.
It has been an incredibly tough journey to get here (lucky me training during the UK winter) with regular 5am cycle starts in the dark, snow, rain, sleet, wind and -4 degree temperatures, to get used to being on my bike for 7+ hours. Not to mention hours in the pool/sea and regular running training in the dark.
At times I’ve doubted if I should even try to attempt this, but the support has been amazing and I’m always up for crazy challenges - I blame that English Channel swim! Anyway, it’s too late to turn back now and I’m off to Port Elizabeth to take on this beast. I was going to keep this really quiet as I’m nervous and have quite a bit of self doubt, but knowing I can make a difference is a strong motivator.
This year I’m supporting the Uitsig Animal Rescue Centre - a charity that means a great deal to me as an animal lover and an organisation that I have been working with during my sabbatical in Cape Town. I know I usually send these sorts of requests out each year (sorry good people!) and this year I promise to be a bit less relentless in my quest (there’ll be no auction party with a live band for example).
