Personal message

Hi, my name is Andrea Icely. I am a proudly born and bred South African medical doctor, currently employed by Doctors Without Borders (MSF), part of the South African COVID response team. 

 Most recently (pictured), myself and the team of nurses (with permission) that I was fortunate enough to call my colleagues worked during the COVID 3rd wave at Ngwelezana Hospital in northern KZN. 

 I have chosen this photo simply because I like it and have fond memories of this group of people, even through some of the more challenging days. As a doctor and having worked in rural KZN for the last four years, I feel deeply protective over paediatric cases, which is why I am thankful for the Rainbows and Smiles Foundation.

 As a traumatic event that unfortunately happens to some kiddies, any organisation genuinely improving the lives, even in a small way, of kids with cancer and their loved ones has my whole-hearted support.

 I joined up in September for the Run for a Reason campaign (also with Rainbows and Smiles Foundation) and enjoyed my involvement with them, so happy to do so again. This time cycling the 94.7 MTB race on November 13th.

 I love running and mountain biking, so if I can do an activity that I enjoy AND do it for a good cause, I can think of no better reason to get out of bed that morning! Thanks to Rainbow and Smiles for facilitating all of this."

Rainbows and Smiles is a childhood cancer foundation close to her heart.  If our brave little fighters can face hardship each day, then keep those legs pumping as admiration for their strength. 
Every year in South Africa, almost 1000 children are diagnosed with cancer.

 Our socio-economic challenges, and generally poor awareness of early warning signs of childhood cancer, means that many of these children are diagnosed very late into their illness. As a result, they face a difficult battle.

Team Rainbows Riders is on a mission to raise awareness and funds for children fighting cancer.

Rainbows and Smiles is a community-based, charitable foundation dedicated to providing emotional, social and financial support to children diagnosed with cancer or a life-threatening illness and their families and caregivers.

The government does not fund rainbows and Smiles, and we rely on the generosity of our supporters and the passion of our volunteers to enable us to do the work we do.
