Personal message

I am a proud mother of two healthy teenagers, and this will be my fourth Comrades Marathon.

In my line of work, I spend a lot of time in hospitals. In hospital one becomes a patient, which can be an extremely dehumanising experience for kids and their parents. Add to this a life-threatening diagnosis, and a place of healing becomes a very frightening place to be. 

For me “Rainbow and Smiles” symbolises bringing hope and laughter to kids with cancer, and this is demonstrated in every aspect of the work that they do. Hope is the belief that a positive outcome lies ahead, which can be a really difficult belief to hold onto in the face of cancer. 

For kids with cancer, having a sense of hope can help them face their challenges with greater strength and confidence.

Hope and laughter reminds them and everybody around them that they are more than a diagnosis, more than a patient – they are a human being, and more importantly, they are a kid with hopes and dreams and the innate need to have fun.
