Personal message

The year covid changed my life.  Through all the hardships, emotional turmoil, and challenges we faced, my running has kept my sanity.  The group of friends that have been by my side has kept me on “track” emotionally and we have pushed each other to stay physically strong.  On Sunday, 13 June 2021 I will be running 90km. 

90 km is going a massive accomplishment, especially in “pandemic year”  There will be no massive group start time or fancy expo, no supporters shouting my name every 3km, and an enthusiastic crowd won’t be cheering me through when my body is exhausted and broken.  

This year I run 90km with purpose, determination, guts, and a dinosaur balloon.  I will push my physical and mental boundaries because I am doing this for children fighting cancer.  Each year I start holding a dinosaur balloon, so people can spot the “Ally Bus” but also because the bravest little boy Astin died just before my 2018 comrades challenge.

 Astin loved dinosaurs, LEGO, his parents, and his sister so much, we miss him and we honour him.  Rainbows and Smiles team will forever hold onto his legacy and his precious memory.  My tradition of running for Dino-boy will be continued.   

I am aware that times are difficult but your change can make a change.  Please consider donating R1 per kilometre.  Help me meet my target and make an impact on the lives of children fighting cancer.

 This charity is very close to my heart, having fun a few races with the founding member, Bonni, who speaks about the children, their brave fight, the struggles, and the reality of childhood cancer continuously. I am a father of 3 and I am thankful that my beautiful daughter and my two boys are healthy.  If Covid has shown me anything, its to appreciate the people around me.

The mission of Rainbows and Smiles is to provide emotional, social and financial support to families and caregivers in need when a child or children of that family is diagnosed with a life threatening illness such as cancer. In addition, Rainbows and Smiles encourage childhood cancer awareness to educate in the hope of promoting early detection.
